About The Featured Story:

What is this?

The Featured Story is exactly that, a place to feature stories. It was designed with the same principle as the Featured Art, Featured Wiki and the Daily Poem: to show off the creative genius of Elftown's members. There are so many great stories out there that don't get the praise that they deserve; the Featured Story will hopefully be a remedy for that.

Feel free to nominate a story; if it follows the rules and we like it, we will feature it. A story will be featured twice a month and the writer will get some well-deserved attention as well as a shiny new badge. You can see current and previous stories on <URL:featured_story.html>.

How do I nominate a story?

To nominate a story you can go to nominate a story. There you will find the rules and ways of submitting a story.

If you have any questions or concerns you can message [Nioniel] or [Stephen].

Current Feature:

The featured story for 15th September 2014 is brought to you by [Kestrelfeather].
"This planet…we are not alone on it…in the shadows of night, we see forms, apparitions. When I try to look closely, they fade away. This planet…It is my belief that it is not meant for us. I think we should leave. There is a darkness rising on Arjuna.

It takes an unusually high mental capacity to ignore the rambling thoughts of the Collective and focus only on the voice you want to hear. For me, a biologist currently trying to find salvation for the human race, that one voice I search for is often the root of all life: the Earth spirit. There are billions upon billions of thoughts in the Collective. Of reproduction, of love, of war…every life on Earth sends energy into it. Until recent decades, human kind, Homo sapiens, didn’t have the ability to tap into it. Being bipedal and with advanced abilities, the last step in human evolution was of the mind. It took thousands of years, but eventually select humans developed the ability that for so long, man had been lacking.
I am part of the Collective, one of the Listeners, the first human ever to hear the voice of the Earth itself. Although my grades in ‘Silent’ school weren’t spectacular, at a young age my Listening abilities surpassed any other humans’ in the world. At age twelve, I was pulled from school, isolated from the other children. I was the only one in my class with Listening ability, answering middle-school level biology exam questions with complex diagrams and exact genetic codes. "

We hope you enjoy reading this captivating story! <img:stuff/aj/61513/1267019305.png><img:stuff/aj/61513/1267019305.png>

2009-04-27 [Chimes]: Yeah: My question is... if it means something different to that... what do you mean? :P

2009-04-28 [Lady of Lore]: What I mean is that someone could take a story form here and send it to a publishing company and claim that it is their own. Now if the author has not copyrighted that work to their name, technically the person who sent it to the publisher could make money off of it and the original writer could make nothing.

One easy way, in the U.S., to copyright something is to mail yourself a manuscript and never open it. That way you have a manuscript that is stamped and dated by the federal government (the postage stamp on the envelope that says they delivered it).

Writing is technically copyrighted to you the moment you write it down but to "prove" that it is yours in case someone steals your idea takes some kind of planning or documentation.

2009-04-28 [Lady of Lore]: Sorry if that was lengthy, I've been writing a novel for the passed 10 years so I'm a little protective of my work :P I've looked into copyrighting a little but there may be things I don't know<img:stuff/mood11-gif.gif>

2009-05-09 [Skydancer]: If your really serious about copyrights and publishing the best thing is to register it with the copyright office, not just do the envelope thing. Then you really are protected and your work is kept as part of the library of congress for future reference in cases of copyright and historical reference.
In the USA of course. :)

2009-05-09 [Skydancer]: I quote the US Copyright Office here.
"Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work."

2009-05-10 [Lady of Lore]: ^_^ I just thought it might be something worth mentioning. It seemed like something that could happen, given how many art thieves there are in the world, it would make sense to have story thieves. :P

2009-05-10 [Lady of Lore]: Thanks Skydancer ^_^

2009-06-05 [Duke Devlin]: Still not enough nominations? :(

2009-06-05 [Linderel]: No, so go dig more!

2009-06-05 [Duke Devlin]: I will do that! >:O

2009-06-06 [Chimes]: Rules say if it's chaptered it doesn't have to be finished, I do believe. :P At least, I remember thinking up that rule anyhow.

2009-06-06 [Chimes]: We need one more nomination to have enough for this to start properly so if you want to nominate a story... do it! We like nominations and we want to start featuring. :)

2009-06-07 [Duke Devlin]: Oooo Ooooo Oooooo!!!! *goes to hunt storehs*

2009-06-07 [Chimes]: Hunt them at all times :P

2009-06-07 [Duke Devlin]: I do. >:) 'Cept now, because I am doing art work, and revision of Pi and Storm. D:

2009-06-10 [Hedda]: Now on Mainstreet! Time to put up the first story!

2009-08-09 [Akayume]: Wahhh! I love this idea! :D I will get to nominating stories now. >:O

2009-08-19 [losthero]: Okay revisions have been completed and chapters merged completely there is only one chapter so far and I am working on Chapter II!

A Dream To Remember

2009-08-21 [Duke Devlin]: You need to go to Nominate a Story :P

2009-08-21 [losthero]: It is already on the nominations...just letting everyone know that it is revised :P

2009-08-23 [Duke Devlin]: Oh right. XD Sorry. :P
